The first tip in the article was about using the phone to get the best rates on flights and hotels. This is something that deserves a few comments about the "VALUE OF TIME".
Really...isn't there a value on your time?
And this is exactly what this comment from a reader addressed how travel savings is really about saving time and saving money. (See The Comment Below)
Because I value my time, I found the "retro tips" fell short. Instead of doing all of the time consuming tips in the article I find it much easier and much faster to allow 2 "Travel Search Engines" to do all of the work for me.
A "Travel Search Engine" is a travel booking site that searches 100s of different travel sites and posts the lowest rates for you. It's fast and easy. And they pull up great rates. The 2 sites to use are:
- BestTravelCoupon.com - This travel site has the largest inventory of hotel deals and cheap flights of any website.
- Kayak.com - I use this site 2nd and use it primarily to confirm the low rates I find on BestTravelCoupon.com.
Using these 2 sites is all you need to do to "Save Time And Money" when searching for travel deals. Let me tell you...it sure beats spending hours on the phone, as well as, bouncing from one travel site to another.
Here is the comment from the NY TIMES ARTICLE:
"Travel Savings" consists of 2 things:
1. Time saved searching for your travel deals.
2. Of course...money saved.
The time aspect is just as important to me.
Just a few months ago, Google announced the average travel shopper still visits over 20 different travel sites(over 9.5 sessions at the computer) before booking. That, for me, is a LOT OF WASTED time.
On Travel-Search-Engines.com they have a travel guide with a few simple tips on how to avoid this wasted time and quickly find the best deals.

I can also sum it up to you. They suggest using just 2 sites to shop for travel. These sites search all of the travel sites (and one Kayak uses some of the same search tools as sites such as Expedia). So you can avoid searching over and over again for the same results.
The travel sites are:
1. http://BestTravelCoupon.com
2. http://Kayak.com
Both of them search other sites and post the lowest rates. Just use 2 and go with the lower rate.
That's all you need. Save time and money.
If you want to spend more time you can take some of the hotel rates you get online and call the hotel directly. I have done that before with mixed results. I usually got them to match but wasted more time calling so it wasn't worth it any more for me.
